Welcome back to Therapy Chat! As we welcome the New Year, we are welcoming new perspectives. This week’s episode is all about reconsidering what you’ve always thought about dissociation (if you’ve thought about it at all!).

This week’s guest is Dr. Jamie+ Marich. Jamie/Dr. Jamie uses she/they pronouns, identifying as a bisexual woman in recovery from a substance-related disorder who is part of a dissociative system. She is also an internationally recognized speaker, trainer in EMDR and expressive arts, the author of many books, and a psychotherapist in private practice.  Their newest book, Dissociation Made Simple, includes stories shared by Jamie/Dr. Jamie and 61 contributors, nearly 40 of whom are mental health clinicians living with dissociative disorders. The book is for anyone to learn about dissociation, and the stories shared truly demystify this misunderstood and highly stigmatized experience.

Listen in to hear Laura and Jamie+ discuss:

– Reconceptualizing trauma

– Understanding the spectrum of dissociation

– Bias and misinformation in the therapy community about Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID)

– Intersectionality of oppression and how it plays into stigma surrounding trauma and mental health, especially around dissociation

– How to use the book

– Speaking truth to powerful systems and institutions

– Pierre Janet and Sigmund Freud

Dr. Jamie+ Marich (she/they) describes themselves as a facilitator of transformative experiences. A clinical trauma specialist, expressive artist, writer, yogini, performer, short filmmaker, reiki master, TEDx speaker, and recovery advocate, she unites all of these elements in her mission to inspire healing in others. Jamie is a woman in long-term recovery from an addictive disorder and is living loudly and proudly as a woman with a
dissociative disorder with the goal of smashing stigma about dissociation in the mental health field and in society at large.

Jamie+ began her career as a humanitarian aid worker in Bosnia- Herzegovina from 2000–2003, primarily teaching English and music. Jamie travels internationally teaching on topics related to trauma, EMDR Therapy, expressive arts, mindfulness, and yoga, while maintaining a private practice and online education operations in her home base of northeast Ohio. Jamie is the founder of The Institute for Creative Mindfulness and the developer of the Dancing Mindfulness approach to expressive arts therapy. She is the developer of Yoga for Clinicians.
